Integrative medicine combines practices and treatments from naturopathic medicine and conventional medicine. Nowhere is the need for an integrative approach more obvious than in the treatment of Lyme Disease and other tick-borne illnesses.
Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted by the bite of an infected deer tick. An acute infection comes on suddenly with flu-like symptoms. Untreated, a chronic infection can slowly corrode health and quality of life. Patients often complain of symptoms like fatigue, joint or muscle pain, headache, “brain fog” and memory loss, and vision problems. Before they reach a correct diagnosis, patients with Lyme disease may have received incorrect diagnoses such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, a neurological disorder, or chronic headaches. While a bulls-eye rash is a hallmark of Lyme disease, it is not found in every patient and is not required for diagnosis.
In acute stages, antibiotics are the weapon of choice, with specific protocols necessary to help your immune system eradicate the pathogens. Herbal supplements, a special diet, and natural treatments are always used to help support your whole body during this process.
In long-term infections, or chronic Lyme, an entirely herbal approach may be the best route to improvement without producing disabling Herxheimer reactions. Very slow, pulsed treatment regimens will support your recovery; it is not a fast process but a marathon, and may or may not include any antibiotics depending on your unique situation.
At Integrative Medicine of Frederick we offer a team approach to the evaluation and treatment of tick-borne illnesses. You’ll first meet with our naturopathic doctor and our nurse practitioner, for an intensive and comprehensive exam and consultation. They’ll review your history, labs, and prior treatments and develop a customized plan to help you get well. You’ll then talk with our Health Coach, who is a Lyme survivor, to help support your treatment and coping process. You’ll also be invited to join our Lyme Support Group which provides support and ideas for living a satisfying and more robust life despite Lyme.
